At United Kickboxing Academy (UKA), our grading system is intentionally different from the traditional large, public grading days you may see at other martial arts schools. Our gradings are conducted in small groups or private assessment settings, allowing us to properly assess each student as an individual—not just as part of a crowd. This approach reflects our commitment to high standards, meaningful progression, and student confidence.
Martial arts development is personal. Every student progresses at a different pace, with different strengths, challenges, and learning styles. By keeping gradings small and more private, we are able to:
Small group gradings create the best environment for students to succeed:

At UKA, gradings are not a show, they are an assessment of growth. By keeping them small, focused, and personal, we uphold the values of martial arts: Respect. Discipline. Confidence. Integrity. Every stripe, belt, and rank earned represents real progress and that is something students can carry with pride for life.
Parents play an important role in helping students feel prepared and confident before a grading. Simple support goes a long way:
Why are UKA gradings done in small groups or privately?
Small group gradings allow instructors to clearly see each student’s ability without distraction. Technique, control, focus, and attitude can all be assessed properly. This also reduces pressure and nerves, especially for younger students.
Why doesn’t UKA run large, public grading days like other schools?
Large grading days often prioritise volume over quality. At UKA, we prioritise accuracy, fairness, and standards. Smaller gradings ensure every student receives a genuine assessment rather than being rushed through a checklist.
Why isn’t my child grading at the same time as their friends?
Students grade when they are ready, not when others are. This protects confidence, prevents gaps in skill, and ensures every belt earned truly reflects ability.
Are gradings harder at UKA?
Our gradings are not about being harder — they are about being honest. Students are assessed on what they have been taught and given time to master. Passing means the student is genuinely ready for the next level.
Do instructors help or coach students during gradings?
No. Gradings are formal examinations. Instructors do not coach, prompt, or correct during the assessment. This ensures results are fair and consistent for all students.
Why don’t instructors give corrections during the grading?
Corrections would turn an exam into a coaching session. All coaching happens during regular classes. The grading simply measures how well the student can perform independently.
What exactly are instructors looking for during a grading?
We assess:
What happens if my child does not pass a grading?
Not passing is not a failure. The student receives clear feedback on what to improve and continues training until ready. This protects long-term development and confidence.
Will my child be held back compared to other students?
No. Being well-prepared always leads to faster progress in the long run. Students who move up too quickly often struggle later. We build strong foundations first.
How often do gradings happen?
Gradings are scheduled based on student readiness and consistent training, not fixed dates. This keeps progression fair and personalised.
If you have any questions about gradings or your child’s progression, our coaching team is always happy to help.
